SUMMARY:48th Annual Odessa Deutschesfest
DESCRIPTION:In it’s 48thyear\, the Odessa community is hosting Deutschesfest\, a festival tribute to the small town’s German heritage. With German music drifting down the streets of this small farming town\, the delicious scent of homemade German staples fills the air\, drawing in folks from all over for a taste of Germany. \nAlong the main streets of Odessa\, the very heart and soul of Deutschesfest can be found among the Festplatz\, a less than traditional “food court”. With a variety of delicacies served from colorful chalets\, a visitor will find kuchen\, cabbage rolls\, kraut ranza\, and apple strudel among so many other treats\, all prepared by local community groups. While all of these are must-try eats\, one wouldn’t be able to leave town without a bit of kartoffeln ‘n kloess and locally made German sausage. \nFood is not the only attraction for the weekend\, although no one will leave hungry. There are many attractions throughout the weekend for the whole family to enjoy\, ranging from trike races for the kids\, to the Biergarten for the adults and the annual Fun Run for all ages. Snag a seat at the Friday night football game where the high school team competes in the Sausage Bowl\, or grab a spot along the main streets for the community parade held Saturday morning. With craft fairs and street vendors\, there’s always something new to discover. If music is your liking\, the Outdoor Stage at Festplatz has continuous talent\, including a traditional German band of surrounding community locals\, the Oom Pas and Mas. If you miss them on the Outdoor Stage\, you’ll be able to catch them any night inside the Biergarten\, along with the chance to catch one of the coveted chickens during the highly anticipated Chicken Dance! \nDeutschesfest is put on by descendants of the German Russians who settled in Odessa at the beginning of the 20thCentury. A strong appreciation of good food\, drink\, music and dancing has been handed down through generations to give this festival a touch of care you’ll only find from those with true hometown pride. Deutschesfest will be held Friday through Sunday\, September 13th-16thwith activities from breakfast through dinner. This gives you the perfect reason to get the family together\, break out your lederhosen and dirndls and load up the motorhome or trailer to bring everyone out for a weekend of fun.

SUMMARY:Northwest Craft Spirit Festival at Mt. Hood Meadows
DESCRIPTION:Mt. Hood Meadows presents the first annual Northwest Craft Spirit Festival Saturday\, September 1. Five local distilleries will be on hand to pour samples of their spirits\, and serve up cocktail demonstrations. The festival runs from 1 – 5 PM and features the music of Jenny Lee and the Menagerie. The Spirits Festival will be held outdoors on our Sun Deck\, in full view of Mt. Hood. The scenic chair will also be running\, inspiring those attending to take some hikes as well. There will be games on the deck and the Schuss Café will be open for those who would like to dine. \nIn the “BarSmarts Advanced” handbook by David Wondrich\, Dale DeGroff\, and Paul Pacult\, the term “spirits” for alcohol is attributed to Aristotle. “Aristotle wrote about this process in 327 B.C.\, but we have no proof that his fellow Greeks distilled spirits on any significant volume level\,” the handbook reads. “Nonetheless\, he was the one who gave the name of ‘spirit’ to the product of distillation. He thought drinking a distilled beer or wine put ‘spirits’ into the body of the drinker.” \nAlchemists in the Middle East were the first to master distillation. They weren’t only trying to find gold\, either. They were also trying to make medical elixirs. To do so\, they would distill liquid\, collect the vapor\, and gather the “spirit” that came off the material. \nThe Northwest Craft Spirit Festival is $15 at the door\, or $12 if purchased online in advance (at http://www.skihood.com). Meadows also offers overnight RV Parking that evening for self-contained vehicles that can be reserved online for $12 (or $15 day of). \nDistillers attending include: \n\n44 North\nBig Gin\nTrails End\nClear Creek\nHood River Distillers with Double Mountain Hopped Whiskey\n\nMeadows offers scenic chair ride and hiking experiences from 10 AM – 4 PM Thursdays through Sundays\, and until sunset on Saturdays. The last day of the summer season will be Labor Day.
