SUMMARY:2017 Holiday Ale Festival
DESCRIPTION:It’s the most wonderful time of the year for winter beer lovers: the 22nd annual Holiday Ale Festival will take place Nov. 29 through Dec. 3 at Pioneer Courthouse Square\, 701 SW Sixth Ave.\, in Portland. The Northwest’s only outdoor winter beer festival – which is tented and heated – will feature 55 craft beers\, ciders and meads in the main lineup\, all of which are made or blended specifically for the event. Event hours are 11am to 9:30pm Wednesday through Saturday\, and 11am to 5pm Sunday. \nHeld in the heart of downtown Portland\, the Holiday Ale Festival keeps attendees warm and dry under a large clear top tent that covers Pioneer Courthouse Square while allowing for views of the city lights. Gas heaters create a cozy ambiance under the boughs of one of the region’s largest decorated Christmas trees. \nMore than 50 potent winter ales are featured at this year’s event\, all of which are created specifically to bring warmth and cheer to the holiday season. These aren’t beers you’ll find in the supermarket – our brewers have put together special recipes just for the Holiday Ale Festival. From Belgians and Barleywines to Stouts and Sours\, these beers are rich\, robust and full of complex flavors. View the 2017 participant and product list at HolidayAle.com\, and download a detailed spreadsheet on Google Drive.

SUMMARY:Seattle Brewing: Craft\, Culture\, and History
DESCRIPTION:Pike Place Market is partnering with The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History to host the American Brewing History Initiative\, on Friday\, December 8\, 2017 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. to lead a lively discussion about Seattle’s brewing history along with tastings by featured craft brewers. \nThe conversation will explore the stories and history of craft brewing in the city with a “farm-to-glass” approach\, featuring a multi-generational panel from perspectives of craft brewing\, home brewing and agriculture. \nA panel consisting of Dick Cantwell\, co-founder of Elysian Brewing Co.\, Charles and Rose Ann Finkel\, founders of Pike Brewing Co.\, Annie Johnson\, Master Brewer-in-Residence\, PicoBrew\, and a representative from Skagit Valley Malting will discuss what is means to be an artisan\, craft or producer today\, and in the future; how contemporary brewers and growers incorporate a sense of history into their product; and what distinguishes the brewing culture of the Pacific Northwest. The event moderator is Theresa McCulla\, social and cultural historian of food and drink at the National Museum of American History. \nOver the course of more than a century\, Seattle brewers and their customers have created one of the nation’s singular brewing cultures. A rich blend of resources shaped this story: the fragrant hops that grow in the surrounding region; a sense of identity rooted in geography and cuisine; and a brewing community that flourished via dedication to ideals of creativity and professional mentorship. As a result\, Seattle changed the course of American brewing history while simultaneously writing its own story. \nTickets to the event are $48 and can be purchased here. Tickets will include six beer tastings and an assortment of heavy appetizers prepared by Chef Traci Calderon of Pike Place Market Atrium Kitchen. The small plates will feature the Market producers including Beecher’s Cheese\, Uli’s Famous Sausage\, Pike Place Chowder\, smoked salmon from Pike Place Fish and mini-cheesecakes from The Confectional. \nA sunset happy hour will be hosted at Old Stove Brewing Co. from 4 to 6 p.m. \nFor more information on the National Museum of American History’s Food exhibit\, visit http://americanhistory.si.edu/food. SUMMARY:Oregon Tempranillo Celebration
DESCRIPTION:The Oregon Tempranillo Alliance (OTA) is gearing up to host the 2018 Oregon Tempranillo Celebration from January 19-21 at the Hilton DoubleTree in Portland. Stimulated by growth in acreage planted\, production tonnage\, critical acclaim and market share for Oregon Tempranillo\, producers from around the state will congregate for a weekend of celebration\, education and tasting\, culminating with the Grand Tasting\, where consumers will have the opportunity to sample from among the best Tempranillo in the state. \n“Wine critics have affirmed that Oregon Tempranillo has excellent quality\, rivaling the famous Spanish Tempranillo wines. Oregon Tempranillo appeals to sophisticated wine aficionados who are looking for a bigger Oregon red wine\,” said founding OTA member\, Earl Jones. “We have learned that excellent Tempranillo can be produced throughout the state\, and that Oregon could be known around the world for its fine Tempranillo.” \nThe programming for January 19 and 20 is devoted to the wine trade\, and will feature seminars with a focus on various viticulture and winemaking aspects of Tempranillo\, with a special seminar devoted to sampling key differences between premium Tempranillo from Spain and Oregon. \nThe Grand Tasting is being held Sunday\, January 21 from 1:00-4:00 pm in the Exhibit Hall at the Hilton DoubleTree. This is an amazing opportunity for consumers to sample from among the best Tempranillo wines in Oregon\, accompanied by an array of sumptuous tapas and a FREE logo souvenir wine glass. Tickets are $75 and are available online at www.oregontempranilloalliance.com/tickets.

SUMMARY:NW Coffee Beer Invitational
DESCRIPTION:DATE: Saturday\, January 27th\, 2018 \nTIME: 12:00 – 7:00pm \nLOCATION: Goose Hollow Inn\, 1927 SW Jefferson St\, Portland 97201 \nThis year is the 5th NW Coffee Beer Invitational\, Portland’s intimate mid-winter beer festival where talented beverage-makers are asked to get creative with locally-roasted coffee. We have a cidery and a meadery in the line-up alongside 19 outstanding breweries. To celebrate our 5th year\, we asked past festival-favorite brewers Alan Taylor (PINTS and Zoiglhaus Brewing)\, Ben Nehrling (Fire on the Mountain Brewing) and Kevin Shaw (Buoy Brewing) to collaborate with Din Johnson (Ristretto Roasters) and make a special anniversary beer. Brewed at Buoy in Astoria\, it will be released at the festival. \nAll beverages are in competition and a best of show winner will be announced at the festival. Nicole Kasten (Beer Connections)\, Sarah Pederson (Saraveza)\, and John Foyston (long-time Oregon beer writer) will bring their expert palates to our judging table. \nThe cozy tent at the Goose Hollow Inn is our venue again\, so join us for unique beverages in a “stimulating” atmosphere. Great food from the Goose will be available throughout the event and we will have live music from The Michael Shay Trio (12:00-3:00pm) and festival favorites Logger’s Daughter (3:30-6:30pm). \n$20 admission includes a festival glass and 10 taster tickets. \nFamily friendly. Tickets at the door only.
