DESCRIPTION:Breweries from around the state will celebrate Oregon’s craft beer scene in February by taking part in the 12th annual Zwickelmania\, opening their doors to the public with tours\, tastings\, meet-the-brewer sessions\, and free samples. Nearly 60 Portland Metropolitan area breweries will celebrate the event on Feb. 15\, while another 50 breweries throughout the rest of the state take part on Feb. 22. \nZwickelmania is named in honor of the zwickel\, a screw valve that mounts on the outside of fermentation or conditioning tanks and allows brewers to sample the beer inside for quality assurance and control. \nThirty breweries from across the state have collaborated on a limited run Zwickelmania beer that will be canned and sold at participating breweries during the event. “State of Excitement IPA” is a West Coast IPA collectively created by 30 Oregon brewers to celebrate the friendly and collaborative nature of the Oregon beer scene. State of Excitement IPA will be available for purchase at select breweries during Zwickelmania. According to organizer Kendall Jones of the Washington Beer Blog\, triple IPAs are no longer a participation requirement. \n“This year\, we decided to switch things up a bit and create a different set of requirements\,” writes Jones. “While some beer fans were saddened to hear that we’d dropped the triple IPA requirement\, it turns out a lot of the breweries decided to make triple IPA anyway. The new requirement simply stated that the beers feature a complete expression of hop character and clock in at no less than 50 IBU (International Bitterness Units). … there’s no shortage of triple IPAs\, but there are plenty of other hoppy creations as well.” \nBesides\, IPAs and other beers with heavy use of bittering hops seem to be normalizing toward nuances of flavoring instead of giant sand wedges to the palate.
